About Van Gogh and Schizophrena

The artist who suffered from schizophrenia was Van Gogh. Vincent Van Gogh was a Dutch artist who is most famous for his paintings “Starry Night” and “Sunflowers.” Inspired by Impressionism while in France, Van Gogh began to form his own distinctive painting style, which was highly colorful and stylized. Throughout his life, Van Gogh engaged in heavy smoking and drinking, including the highly dangerous alcoholic drink absinthe. To this day, historians, biographers, and psychologists are uncertain exactly what kind of mental illness Van Gogh had, though his periods of depression, erratic thoughts, and lethargy seem to suggest schizophrenia. Throughout his life, Van Gogh struggled with his mental illness, going through periods of sporadic or prolonged depression and inactivity, which further frustrated him due to his inability to work on his art. Van Gogh’s supposed schizophrenia has become romanticized and enshrined as part of the mythology of artistic culture, but it eventually led to Van Gogh’s death at the age of 37 due to complications of a gunshot wound. Despite apparently shooting himself in an attempt at suicide, the bullet missed all of his vital organs, though an infection would later set in and cause his death. According to those who were with him on his deathbed, Van Gogh’s last words were “The sadness will last forever.”
