Alexandre Dumas, or by his birth name Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, was a French novelist and playwright active in the middle 19th century. Alexandre Dumas is most famous for his novels The Count of Monte Cristo, and The Three Musketeers. The Count of Monte Cristo has in particular become one of the biggest literature classics in western civilization, incorporating themes of hope, justice, mercy, love, romance, selfishness, vengeance and forgiveness. The book is an adventure novel that was finished in 1844 and made in collaboration with the ghostwriter Auguste Maquet. The story takes place in Italy, France and the islands of the Mediterranean during events in history between 1815 and 1839, beginning right before the Hundred Days, which was the period when Napoleon returned from exile. The story revolves around a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, eventually escapes and acquires a fortune of money, then sets out for revenge against those responsible for his wrong imprisonment. The Count of Monte Cristo first appeared in serial form in a French journal called Journal des Debats in 1844 and was soon after compiled and published as one complete work.
